How do I properly use a stop ring with a Zund router
Using a stop ring with a Zund router (typically a Zund CNC cutter/router with a routing module like the RM-L or RM-S) helps control the routing depth consistently. Here’s a step-by-step on how to properly use a stop ring with the Zund router module:
What is a Stop Ring?
A stop ring is a mechanical depth limiter fitted onto the router bit. It physically stops the bit from plunging deeper than a set height into the material.
How to Properly Use a Stop Ring with Zund Router:
1. Select the Right Bit and Ring
- Choose a router bit compatible with your material (e.g., acrylic, MDF, foam).
- Pick a stop ring that matches the shaft diameter of your bit and provides the correct cutting depth for your job.
2. Install the Stop Ring
- Slide the stop ring onto the router bit shaft.
- Position it so the cutting edge protrudes just enough to cut your material (e.g., for 3mm acrylic, expose just over 3mm).
- Tighten the set screw or locking mechanism on the stop ring using an appropriate tool (usually a hex key or Allen wrench).
Make sure it's secure — a loose stop ring can damage the material or machine.
3. Insert Bit into the Router
- Insert the bit with the stop ring into the collet of the Zund router module.
- Tighten the collet nut to secure the bit.
- Ensure the stop ring is seated against the collet face — this is what will stop the plunge depth.
4. Set Routing Parameters in Software
- In Zund Cut Center (ZCC), set the cut depth to match the stop ring configuration.
- You can technically set the depth to deeper than the material thickness, but the physical stop ring will prevent overcutting.
5. Test on Scrap Material
- Run a test cut to ensure:
  - The router cuts through cleanly.
  - The depth is correct.
  - There’s no excessive pressure on the material surface from the stop ring.
Pro tip: On soft or delicate materials (like foams or vinyl-faced boards), make sure the stop ring doesn’t mar or crush the surface.
Maintenance Tips:
- Check stop rings regularly for wear or buildup.
- Replace them if they are dented or if the set screw loosens easily.
- Make sure the router collet is clean to avoid vibration or runout.
